- Too big to carry
- 25, 45 or 55 cm
- Oxford fabric cover
- Webbing handles
Give the instinct a job. It's too big to carry, so your dog pushes, chases and steers it like stock.
- Best for
- Herding breeds and other busy dogs, in the size that suits them
- Not for
- Chewing, or dogs that grab and shake their toys
- Where
- Grass or dirt: the backyard, the park, the paddock
- How
- Push, chase and steer, with you nearby
This ball is made for chasing, not chewing. Stay close while your dog plays and put it away if they start biting at it.
Description
Kelpies and collies weren't bred to wait by the back door. The Herding Ball is too big to grab, so your dog noses it, pushes it and steers it around the yard the way their instinct wants. It comes in three sizes: 25 cm for small dogs and puppies, 45 cm for kelpies, heelers and collies, and 55 cm for big dogs.
A tough fabric cover sits over an inflatable inner ball, and the webbing handles give you something to grab when you join in.
Materials and size
- The outer cover is Oxford fabric with stitched webbing handles.
- The inner ball is an inflatable bladder.
- It measures 25, 45 or 55 cm across when it's pumped up.
Care
- Wipe the cover down after muddy games.
- Keep the ball pumped up to full size so it rolls true.
- Bring it inside after play, out of the sun.

How to get your dog started
- 1
Let them check it out
Put the ball in the yard and let your dog sniff it. There's no game yet, just a new object to investigate.
- 2
Roll it away from them
Push it gently with your foot so it rolls off. Many herding dogs follow it on instinct.
- 3
Hand over the job
Once they start pushing it back, step out of the way. Ten minutes is plenty for a first session.

Questions about the Herding Ball
Still have a question? Ask our helper in the corner of the screen, or browse the help centre.
Which size is right for my dog?
Pick the size that's too big for your dog to get their mouth around: 25 cm for small dogs and young puppies, 45 cm for kelpies, heelers, border collies and dogs their size, and 55 cm for big dogs like shepherds, Labs and goldens. If you're between sizes, go bigger.
Is it indestructible?
No ball is. The fabric cover protects the inner ball from claws and grass, but it's made for supervised chasing, not for chewing.
Does it work for dogs that aren't herding breeds?
Many high-energy dogs enjoy pushing it around, but herding breeds tend to take to it fastest, because steering things is what they were bred to do.
